When picking a domain name try and choose something easy to say and
easy to spell. Don't include any hyphens, even though they are allowed
in domain names. Blue-Shift-7.com may look OK on paper, but when
you have to say "Blue hyphen Shift hyphen 7 dot com" you've already
lost them. Dot com (.com) names are preferable but if you can't find
anything available there you should consider dot net (.net) or dot ws
(.ws) assuming that the dot com version is not the same type of site
that you want to make.
Domain names can also help significantly with search placement. If you know that there is a search term people will type in more than anything else to find you, then you should consider using them in your domain name pick. Unfortunately most of those really good keywords are taken.
